Featured Tucson Artist - Candi Baranski

Candi Baranski is the owner, designer, and jewelry maker behind Eye Candi Co. She earned her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis and spent over 25 years painting backdrops for nationally recognized opera and ballet companies along the West Coast. She later founded Superscenics, Inc. in Seattle, a scenic studio that operated for nearly 15 years, producing large-scale backdrops, dioramas, and interpretive exhibits for museums and cultural centers nationwide. At its peak, Superscenics occupied a 15,000 sq. ft. facility and employed over 50 skilled artists and specialists. A catastrophic storm destroyed the studio's building and led to the company’s closure.

Afterward, Candi continued working in the exhibit world until she shifted mediums—retirement brought her to Tucson, AZ, where the Sonoran Desert inspired a new creative chapter: metalsmithing and jewelry-making. Drawing on her artistic roots, she creates intricate etched designs in silver and copper that celebrate the region’s flora and fauna, often incorporating turquoise sourced from specific Southwest mines. Each piece reflects her deep love for the desert—and the joy of knowing her art resonates with those who wear it.

Tepary Beans are a remarkable and ancient legume, cultivated for thousands of years by the Indigenous peoples of the Sonoran Desert. White Tepary Beans (Stotoah Bavi) are characterized by their slightly sweet, nutty flavor and creamy texture. They are commonly used in dishes where a lighter, more delicate bean is desired. Their mild taste makes them ideal for salads, soups, and purees, where they can absorb and complement a variety of flavors.

Brown Tepary Beans (S-Oam Bavi), on the other hand, have a rich, earthy flavor and a firmer texture. The Brown Tepary Bean's more intense taste and texture make it a perfect choice for dishes that require a deep, savory profile.

At Tanque Verde Turquoise Trading Post, we are excited to feature the captivating work of local artist, Julia Flannery, whose "Forever Chandeliers" embody the creative spirit and artistic exploration that we value. Her journey began in an eclectic coffee shop in Flagstaff, Arizona, where she was inspired by unconventional art made from materials like mattress springs and metal. This spark led her to explore various forms of expression, ultimately culminating in the creation of these stunning chandeliers.

Each "Forever Chandelier" is a testament to her dedication to both beauty and durability. Carefully handcrafted, the chandeliers start with the selection of unique beads, which are then strung by hand using metal pins, rings, and chains, designed to withstand the intense Arizona sun. These mesmerizing pieces spin gently, avoiding tangling, and are perfect for patios or windows where they can catch the light and dance in the sun’s rays.

Grandma’s Old Fashioned Homemade Peanut Brittle

Over 35 years ago, Julia’s Grandma sent her annual Christmas gift of homemade peanut brittle. Her husband thought it was the best he’s ever had and begged Julia to learn how to make it so they didn’t have to wait for Christmas. She did! And now Trading Post customers don’t have to wait either! Woohoo!
